I may have mentioned that I recently took a course about the digestive system. The course went through the anatomy, physiology, and function of the various parts of digestion. It also covered health issues that originate in the digestive tract. Turns out? Nearly every disease actually starts there.
It has been really fascinating to me to gain this much deeper understanding of what goes on with the food we eat and what can go wrong. It reminds me of my own quote from a couple of years back:
“If you don’t understand what is causing your illness, all the medicine in the world will not help.”
–Barbara McNeely
You see, one thing about doctors that has frustrated me is that they only want to treat symptoms. When I had round-the-clock migraines, the doctors ignored me when I asked “Why?” They just gave me drugs. Which really only treated symptoms and didn’t get me closer to solving the problem.

Too often doctors treat symptoms, without fully understanding what is going on. And, too often, the drugs that treat symptoms cause issues of their own. So pretty soon you’re on a number of drugs and you still haven’t really solved the original problem, just masked its symptoms.
What I learned in this course was fascinating – including the real issue behind heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD (it’s not what you think), as well as two surprising contributors to obesity.
I learned so much that I’ve actually enrolled in the entire series of classes which covers immunity, the urinary system, endocrine function, the brain and nervous system, and reproduction. I’m really excited about all the knowledge that I’ll be bringing to this blog and to my clients.

I will look forward to hearing what you learn in this course as I have read before that, as you say, many if not most diseases are related to the digestive system. Thanks.
Keep reading, Helene. I really wasn’t sure before this class that digestion had a role in most diseases. Now I know it to be true. If only we all understood that.
